He's had a tough time of it lately but James Arthur stood strong and apologised for his recent controversial actions during the live results show of the X Factor on Sunday night.
The Impossible singer hit the headlines on a number of occasions in recent weeks but shocked fans and was branded "homophobic" after calling unknown rapper Micky Worthless a "f**ing queer" in a diss rap.
The star, who won the X Factor in 2012, performed his new single Recovery on the show but used the opportunity to reach out to the public after his performance.
Speaking to series host Dermot O'Leary, James said: "It's been an amazing year for me. There's been some amazing highs but also some lows.
"I've made some very silly mistakes. I want to thank the X Factor for giving me this opportunity.
"I want to say sorry for abusing my position as an X Factor winner because I owe everything to this thing."
However, James' apology caused a mixed reaction with viewers of the show.

 One Twitter user wrote: "The X Factor should be ashamed of James Arthur after his recent escapades. They dropped Matt Cardle quick enough & he wasn't even a bigot!"
Another tweeted: "You can't deny his incredible voice, but as a gay man, I can't condone James Arthur's homophobic attitude, even if it was 'just a rap battle'."
Critics of the star launched an online petition requesting James be removed from Sunday's X Factor line-up. It gathered more than 9,000 signatures.
The star was recently signed off from work by doctors who diagnosed him with "acute exhaustion" ahead of his nationwide tour sparking concern amongst his family.

At the time, a representative for James said: "Unfortunately James Arthur has been diagnosed with acute exhaustion and instructed to rest for several days by his doctor.

"Regretfully, he has been forced to cancel all engagements during this period. James would like to apologise to his fans for any disappointment caused to them by these cancellations and he hopes to get back to full health as soon as possible."

Fans of the star have also requested an album refund after fellow former X Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan published a bitter text message exchange between the pair.

Angry fans took to Twitter, sharing their emails to iTunes granting a refund on James' debut album because of his comments.
One user wrote: "It's not too late to get your refund on James Arthur's album", another added: "Real people do care".
James became embroiled in a war of words with Lucy after he used the word "queer" in the diss rap about unknown rapper Micky Worthless.
Last month, it emerged he used the derogatory term when performing a diss rap about unknown rapper Micky Worthless, branding him a "f**king queer".
James also used the words "scrubber", "peasant" and "motherf**ker" to insult the up and coming musician.
And the former X Factor champ was slammed by shocked fans on Twitter for his use of the negative terms with the singer even quitting the social networking site insisting only his management would be tweeting on his behalf in the future.    
This isn't the first time James has become embroiled in a war of words with a fellow star - he branded One Direction's Louis Tomlinson a "little b**ch" in a secret text message battle, appeared to rip into his ex Rita Ora, added fuel to the fire of his ongoing battle with fellow former X Factor winner Matt Cardle and launched a scathing attack on all boybands.
